6, 2008, to be Vietnam Veterans Moving Wall Memorial Week, in DeRidder. DeRidder, La. - "A Week of Remembrance" is set to begin on Thursday, July 3 with the set up of the Moving Wall display at the Beauregard Parish Fairgrounds. Public visitation of the wall will begin at noon with opening ceremonies beginning at 7 p.m. Entry to the site can be accessed from Mel Branch Drive, across from Pine Wood Elementary School. Opening ceremonies will feature many special guests and proclamations by both DeRidder Mayor Roberts and Mike McLeod, President of the Beauregard Parish Police Jury.
The Moving Wall, a half-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall located in Washington, D.C., will be on display at fairgrounds, located at 506 West Drive, 24-hours a day from July 3 through 7. Admission is free of charge and on-site security will be provided around the clock.
The Moving Wall travels throughout the United States each year reaching out to people, of all ages, who might never get a chance to experience the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. The Moving Wall, owned and maintained by Vietnam Combat Veterans, Ltd., will make only one stop in Louisiana in 2008.
There are 882 Louisiana veterans listed on The Moving Wall. Eight of those veterans are from DeRidder, including USMC PFC Irving Donald Barrow; USA SFC Albert Franklin; USA SFC James V. Hamilton; USA SSG Rogers Lemander Haywood; USA SP4 Quillard Frank Lyons; USA PFC Richard Allen Rathburn; USA SSG Benjamin Irvin Warren; and USA SMAJ Edward Joseph Guilory, whose body was never recovered, but was listed as killed in action April 17, 1978.
Many others listed are from surrounding communities in Southwest Louisiana. The wall is being brought to the DeRidder area by the Cole-Miers VFW Post 3619 and Ladies Auxiliary. The purpose of the display is to honor and respect, through remembrance and education, those that made the ultimate sacrifice. Vietnam veterans and their families from throughout Louisiana and neighboring Texas counties are encouraged to visit this memorial exhibit.
Guest Speaker at opening cermonies will be Col. Jonathan T. Ball, Cdr 256th Inf Bde of the Lousiana National Guard. Closing cermony will be held at noon on Monday, July 7. Each evening that the wall is up, events will end for the day with the playing of TAPS.
Friday, July 4, families are welcomed to spend the holiday at American Legion Post 27 during their Fourth of July celebration. The non-alcoholic, free, family event will take place starting at 11 a.m. when concessions open, and there will be plenty of food and drinks available for sale. Arts and crafts, a kids' jump room, rock climbing and kids games will be available, among many other things.Warriors Farewell ceremony will be done at 10:00 a.m. and 7 p.m., daily, followed by laying of wreaths by families, friends, organizations.
Sunday, July 6, will begin with field worship service with Army Chaplain LTC (R) Gerald Smith, followed by Warriors Farewell at 10 a.m. and a veteran's luncheon at the fairgrounds from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. A candlelight remembrance to honor POW/MIA, but particularly those from Louisiana whose individual names will be read, will take place at 7 p.m., followed by Warrior's Farewell.
On Monday, July 7, closing prayers of remembrance led by Vietnam Veterans of America will take place at noon following the 10 a.m. Warriors Farewell. Retiring of the colors, followed by the quiet disassembly of the Moving Wall will take place at 1 p.m.
