DeRidder, La. - DeRidder's late inning rally came up short against the Jeff Davis Bank team from Jennings on Friday night at DeRidder High School. The teams played a doubleheader, with two seven inning games on Friday night. The double dip was a rescheduled game from earlier in the summer plus a regularly scheduled game.
After losing the first game 12-4, DeRidder appeared headed for another tough game when JDB jumped out with a ten-run first inning. Jennings got the runs through a fortuitous combination of hitting and a couple of Dodger errors.
DeRidder was unable to get anything going in the bottom half of the first inning.
Quinton Touchette came in to pitch in the second, and was able to shut JDB down. Touchette, who made his debut in the first game, where he faced two batters, gave up a leadoff single to start the inning, but that runner was cut down trying to steal third. He gave up another single, but then got a pop out to second. Rashad Robinson made a nice play at short and throw to first to get the third out of the inning.
In the bottom half of the second inning, Timmy Canales beat out an infield hit and made it all the way to third. But the Dodgers were unable to bring him home and the score stayed 10-0.
Touchette shut JDB down again in the third, getting a groundout to the pitcher for the first out. Then, after walking one batter, they were able to catch him off base and Robinson tagged him out. Touchette then got his first strikeout of the game to end the Jennings half of the inning.
DeRidder finally broke through in the bottom of the third. Jordan Buxton got a leadoff single but was tagged out a moment later trying to get to third. Tony Story then drew a walk. He came home on Robinson's RBI single. But DeRidder couldn't get any more runs, and the inning ended with Jennings still holding to a nine-run lead.
JDB threatened again in the top of the fourth as it appeared that Touchette began to tire. The first batter grounded out, but the next five reached base, and three of them scored. With that, Menard took out Touchette.
Of his debut night, Touchette said "I enjoyed it. I would love to do it more."
Touchette who uses an unorthodox high leg kick, also said of his motion, "it just is what comes naturally. I have to work on getting it more consistent, but it feels natural to me."
Rashad Robinson came in to replace Touchette, and gave up a single, before the next batter grounded to Hanchey at third with the bases loaded. Hanchey stepped on the bag and threw to first for the double play to end the half inning.
The Dodgers served notice that they weren't going away in the bottom of the fourth. Ed Burnett reached on an error and eventually found himself on third. Hanchey also took a walk, as did Canales to load the bases.
Second baseman Pepe Broussard brought home a run with a single, then Hanchey scored on a passed ball.
Two batters later, Anthony Stutes ripped a 2 RBI single, and after a couple of walks, the bases were loaded with Stutes at third, Story at second, Robinson at first, and Jordan Bartlett at the plate.
A passed ball brought home Stutes, then the catcher's errant throw went up the first base line, scoring Story. Robinson, noticing that nobody was covering home, never slowed down around third and scored the play's third run and the Dodgers' seventh and last run of the inning, which ended with the score 13-8.
No one scored in the fifth, but DeRidder stranded three runners on the bases, an opportunity missed.
Both teams added one run in the sixth, and the Dodgers again left the bases loaded in the bottom half of the inning.
JDB added four insurance runs in the top of the seventh, effectively putting the game out of reach.
DeRidder did add two runs in the bottom half to make the final score 18-11.
DeRidder coach Chad Menard wanted to see the kind of effort that the Dodgers showed in the fourth inning throughout the game.
"You might think it is positive, the way we came back in that game, but we need to play that way all of the time, every inning."
In the first game won by JDB, Pepe Broussard had three of the four Dodger RBI.
DeRidder is next in action Monday night in Alexandria, and will be home next Tuesday night against St. Louis of Lake Charles.
