(Psalms 133:1-3)
Psalms 133 opens with King David singing a song. David sings of the blessings of brothering dwelling together, embracing an attitude and a spirit of unity. During the life and reign of King David, this type of unity must have been something greatly desired, yet un-obtained.
Imagine how different our lives would be if we were to experience the kind of togetherness that David sang about?

Politically, we could do so much more toward resolving the many problems we face from day to day, living in the home of the brave and the land of the free. Without the slandering and in-fighting, bickering and backbiting that has become the norm in today’s political arena, our leaders would be able to focus on those things that are good for all Americans, not just those who boast affiliation with a particular party or special interest group. What a difference such togetherness would make in the politics of our nation.

The impact in our communities would also be great. There are so many civil or social organizations seemingly attempting to “re-invent the wheel.” In other words, they put forth lots of effort and expend lots of resources while simply duplicating what some other organization is already doing. When questioned they proudly respond, “We know they’re already doing it - but we think we can do it better!” How wonderful it would be, if instead of duplicating the good others are already doing, we’d allow that spirit of unity in David’s song to prompt us to join in, lending our talents, gifts and resources to those who have already began a good work? Call me crazy if you will, but I am convinced that a community working together would result in making every effort and worthwhile idea a big success. What a difference we’d see in our community if we would only work together.

Spiritually, our church community would be far more effective in bringing the lost to Christ and meeting the needs of the masses who are hurting, if only we would work together. Is it surprising to you that there seems to be so much competition among churches? Am I the only person still struggling with that one? Have you noticed that regardless of your qualifications or how impressive your resume’ may be, candidates belonging to one congregation seem to receive more consideration than candidates belonging to another? The unspoken criteria for one’s ability to progress or succeed seems to be determined, not by ones character or qualifications, but instead by what religious association one belongs to, what one’s denomination affiliation may be, or where one worships on Sunday mornings.

The type of unity and togetherness David sang about is described as “good” and “pleasant.” The word good means, excellent, of high quality, first-class, first-rate, or superior. David sang of the willingness to co-exist equally and in a spirit of unity that is superior to any we’ve ever known. He says this type of unity is pleasant. In other words, it is, enjoyable, agreeable and pleasing to all.

Finally David suggests that when brothering dwell together in this spirit of unity, then and only then, will we truly know the fullness of God blessings. Does God want to bestow such blessings upon us? Certainly He does! That has been His plan and His purpose for mankind since the creation. The problem is not with God. The problem is with us. It’s been said that if we’re not a part of the solution - then we are a part of the problem. Let us ask ourselves, what part am I playing to bring about the type of togetherness and unity in our community that David sang about in his song?
