DERIDDER—Three goals in the final 12 minutes broke a 1-1 deadlock at DeRidder Saturday and propelled the DeRidder Lady Dragons (10-10-1, 2-2 5-4A) to a 4-1 home victory against the Barbe Lady Buccaneers.

DeRidder had nine shots on goal and Barbe had six.

DeRidder goalie Jennifer Stewart had four saves on tough shots and Barbe goalie Melissa Simon had approximately 12 saves.

“We just came out kind of slow in the first half,” DeRidder head coach Shane Wilber said, adding
Barbe took the Lady Dragons out of what they do.

“We came alive in the second half.”

“It’s just tough,” Barbe head coach Joshua Keith said. “We played well, had a couple of breakdowns in back. It’s a frustrating game to play that well and have that type of result.”

With 12:18 to play in the game, Rachel Coronel scored a goal from the left side. She kicked the ball on the leg of the Barbe goalie into the goal. That gave DeRidder a 2-1 lead.

Taylor DeViller scored for DeRidder with 5:13 to play on a Coronel assist to give the Lady Dragons a 3-1 lead.

Coronel scored unassisted to make it 4-1 DeRidder with 1:04 to play in the contest.

Barbe took a 1-0 lead early in the first half when Alexander Zaunbrecker took the ball down and scored unassisted.

DeViller scored from the right side on a Coronel assist with 32:05 to play in the game and tie things up at 1-1.

“Overall, we played well,” Wilber said. “We played extremely well in the second half. This is a good step in preparing for the playoffs.”

Keith credited Coronel for her good play.

“They came out and played well,” Keith said.

DeRidder hosts West Monroe at 5 p.m. Thursday.

DERIDDER—Neither team was able to capitalize on opportunities Saturday when the DeRidder Dragons (17-8-2, 2-2 5-4A) soccer team hosted the Barbe Buccaneers (8-11-2, 0-4 District 3). That led to a defensive battle and 1-1 tie.

“I was disappointed we didn’t pull out the win,” Dragons head coach David Wilber said. “We had more chances and we just didn’t pull it in.”

“We didn’t play bad,” Barbe head coach Curtis Stewart said. “Our touch wasn’t there. We had opportunities to score.”

However, Stewart said Barbe could not finish.

DeRidder had eight shots on goal and Barbe had seven shots on goal.

Barbe goalie Jamie McGee had six saves and gave up the one goal.

DeRidder goalie Sean Austin played the first half and gave up one goal during that time. He had two saves during the first half.

Micah Prudhomme came in and played goalie for DeRidder for most of the second half. He played until there was six minutes in the game and came out with a charlie horse. He had two saves and will be OK to play the next Dragons game.

Austin came back in to finish the game and had one save.

Wilber said he likes to use both goalies because both play well and he wants to keep them in good shape.

Alvais Coronel scored DeRidder’s goal with 13:35 to play in the first half and it was on a Nick Wilkes assist. That gave the Dragons a 1-0 lead.

Janses Rome scored for Barbe to tie the game at 1-1 with 6:30 to play in the first half. The shot was from the left side unassisted.

Both teams had chances to score in the second half, but neither capitalized.

“I thought Caleb Taylor and Justin [Stromberg] played well — our wide defenders,” Wilber said.
Wilber said Eric Stevenson did well filling in at the stopper spot, which is a central defender.

“Eric stepped into that spot and did a good job,” Wilber said.

Michael Miller and Jace Morien both play midfield and were ejected Thursday. That meant both had to miss Saturday’s game and Wilber had to rotate players. Miller also plays the stopper position on occasion.

Stewart said Barbe did the best job possible keeping Coronel in check.

“It’s good for us to battle back after being down 1-0,” Stewart said. “DeRidder is a good team.”
DeRidder is at Loyola at 5:30 p.m. Monday.
