No. 1 Merryville beats Oberlin by 3

MERRYVILLE—The Merryville Lady Panthers (22-2, 4-1 4-1A) showed why they were ranked No. 1 in the state and by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) as they beat the Oberlin Lady Panthers (15-7, 4-1 4-1A) in a district match Monday night at Merryville. The Lady Panthers won 76-73.

Lady Panthers head coach Mark Perow was pleased his team was able to continue its winning ways against Oberlin.

“They’re ranked No. 6 in the state,” Perow said. “It was a big victory for us in district. It was a good game all the way through.”

Merryville outscored Oberlin 23-13 in the first quarter and 23-16 in the third quarter.

Merryville had 27 2-pointers, three 3-pointers and was 13-of-19 from the free throw line.

Oberlin made 27 2-pointers, two 3-pointers and was 13-of-19 from the free throw line.

For the Lady Panthers, Rayne Cournoyer had 24 points, Lindsay Branch had 21 points, Katelyn Phillips had a double-double with 16 points and 16 rebounds, Victoria Williams had 12 points, Brittany Armer had two points and Kiana Gill had one point.

For Oberlin, Logan Fusslier had 23 points, Kristal Lollis had 14 points, Keya Brandon had 14 points, Marquita Boulden had 13 points and Jasmine Briscoe had nine points.

The Lady Panthers are at South Cameron Friday.

BOYS BASKETBALL
OBERLIN 84,
MERRYVILLE 60

MERRYVILLE—The Merryville Panthers (6-19, 1-4 4-1A) fell at home Monday to the Oberlin Tigers 84-60.

Oberlin outscored Merryville 22-14 in the first quarter, 18-15 in the second quarter and 23-8 in the third quarter.

Merryville outscored Oberlin 25-21 in the fourth quarter.

For Merryville, Garrett Knowlton had 20 points and Corey Cantrell had 10 points.

For Oberlin, Mickey Guillory and Spencer Sonnier each had 17 points, H.D. Martin had 14 points, Desmond Antoine had 11 points and Alex Turner had 10 points.

The Panthers are at South Cameron Friday.
